AD9164 is a high-performance 16-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and direct digital synthesizer (DDS) that supports update rates up to 6 GSPS. The DAC core is based on a four-channel switch structure, combined with a 2x interpolation filter, so that the effective update rate of the DAC can be as high as 12 GSPS in some modes. The high dynamic range and bandwidth make these DACs ideal for the most demanding high-speed radio frequency (RF) DAC applications.

DDS consists of a group of 32 32-bit numerically controlled oscillators (NCO), each with a phase accumulator.

When used in conjunction with a 100 MHz serial peripheral interface (SPI) and fast hop mode, it supports phase coherent fast frequency hopping (FFH) and several modes to support multiple applications.

In baseband mode, the component’s wide analog bandwidth capability and high dynamic range are combined to support DOCSIS 3.1 cable infrastructure compliance within the full-scale spectrum range from the smallest carrier to the largest signal bandwidth of 1.791 GHz. The 2x interpolation filter (FIR85) enables the AD9164 to be configured for lower data rates and converter clocks to reduce overall system Power consumption and filtering requirements. In the Mix-Mode™ operating mode, the AD9164 can reconstruct the RF carrier in the second- and third-order Nyquist zones up to 7.5 GHz, while still maintaining excellent dynamic range. The output current can be programmed from 8 mA to 38.76 mA. The AD9164 data interface consists of up to eight JESD204B serializer/deserializer (SERDES) channels. The channel speed and number of channels can be programmed to achieve application flexibility.

The SPI interface can configure AD9164 and monitor the status of all registers. AD9164 is available in 165-pin, 8 mm × 8 mm, 0.5 mm pitch CSP_BGA and 169-pin, 11 mm × 11 mm, 0.8 mm pitch, CSP_BGA packages, including pin options.
